  • The fact that making significant sacrifices in abandoning many of the decadent comforts of this period at our only habitat’s irreparable (on a human timescale) damage expense is met with ridicule shows how determined we are to wreck this place.

Imagine mass famines and frequent catastrophic weather events a couple generations from now. I’m guessing they’ll look at us being above living with our once kind, nurturing habitat with disdain and bewilderment when they’re steeped in the fruits of our lifestyles.

Im not saying going back to the dark ages, im not advocating rejecting knowledge, only the rushing around and consumerism. There’s no more reasonable room for growth, growth is killing us, and robbing us of meaning.

If we can’t live with this paradise, the idea of us spreading to hostile, unforgiving worlds within reach like Mars or Titan is a bad joke. Unlike the infinite mistakes we get to keep making here without instant death, one major mistake out there where we didn’t evolve, and poof everybody dead instantly thanks for playing space faring civilization. That isn’t a game humans can pull off. Maybe some small crew of exceptional people, but certainly not a colony of regular people.

This is what we got. So yeah, maybe spending our time whittling stuff we need and moving at the speed of horse would be better for humanity long term than racing to grow our GDP into extinction.

Whats the endgame of all this growth and “innovation” if it wasn’t killing us as it is? To have Google ad AI generated amalgums of our dead relatives transmitted directly into our brains to convince us to buy more crap?

  • It does, but if a catastrophic war, including one with nuclear weapons, brought us down to 2 billion from 9, those nukes wouldn’t even touch the current course of heavy industry of 9 billion that we recklessly became without a thought in the world about whether our only habitat could support it.

Because shooting wars end, even if through attrition. Industry just keeps metastizing if you let it, and pretty lies like “but we planted trees! That evens out all the shit we’re pumping in the air and water!” are just pretty lies.

If we cared about our species having a future, heavy industry would be scaled back to food/medicine, we could sow our own clothes, go back to horses, breed less, communaly build our own structures, and whittle our own shelf crap, and we could perhaps still provide a future to subsequent generations. We do not.

  • Neither does a cancer cell, or the cows/chickens/pigs we raise for slaughter, or all the marine life choking on our plastic, or the bees, on and on.

Life usually doesn’t want to die, but since industrialization, we’ve decided to betray our place in Earth’s ecosystem, and haven’t stopped beating the shit out of it with the tools we’re clever enough to create but lack the impulse control/desire to wield responsibly.

We had to kill a lot of Nazis to end world war II. They thought they were right, they didn’t want to die, but they had to be stopped because of the needless suffering they were causing. We just largely don’t see or choose to ignore the same reality on an even larger scale because humans not only solely care about and respect human life, we are highly selective even in that in irrational ways.

I’m weird though, I try to take as objective a viewpoint as possible. Looking down from high orbit as an outsider at this lush world’s climate being artificially reverse terraformed to be more hostile towards virtually all life on it, something that would take millions of years to self-correct once the damage stopped, and seeing it all apparently being done by Earth’s apex predator with an apparent death wish pumping shit into the air while seemingly aware of its continuing effect on all life here including themselves, what would you think?

Why are we more important than the approx 8.7 MILLION entire other species that also live here that lack the ability to resist us? Might has been proven time and again that it doesn’t equal right.

  • I vote for the lesser evil(D) like clockwork so I can sleep at night, but it is water pumps on the Titanic, I don’t do it with hope, it only slows the path we’re on slightly, because both our fascist and neoliberal parties worship the same groups of “donors” who are the root cause of our decline. Our government officials are the owner’s well bribed middle managers. That’s what happens when political bribery is legal and corporations have more rights than people. Neither Biden nor Trump nor all but maybe a half dozen people in Congress are less than hyper-capitalists. Most got into politics to be bribed because that’s American politics.

Without revolution, there will be no hope for a better future until collapse. Fortunately for future generations long term, climate change is likely going to force the second one, because we’re too chickenshit and social opiate addicted for the first one. Better painful collapse and rebuild than multigenerational subservience under the Bezos/Zuck/Musk dynasty.

  • Modern Apathy failed to repair the damage, but the ENTHUSIASTIC giveaway of the country to the rich in both capital and power, the “Reagan revolution,” is most directly responsible for the later Citizens United, Trump, and our imminent collapse.

Apathy didn’t destroy this country for the people, Enthusiastic greed worship BY the people did. Greed is a personal failing, character deficit, and is every bit as dangerous and destructive to society as hatred. The Gordon Geckos and Mr. Potters of the nation are supposed to be hated, booed, and shunned by decent people for their antisocial activities, not worshipped as the celebrities and…🤮… Role models they are treated like today.

The owners have spent decades propagandizing us to forget what a societal poison greed is as they took over.

Oh I’m sorry it’s not greed anymore. I meant greed rational self-interest. Shout out to George Orwell.

  • Rome always falls in the end.

Entropy always wins sooner or later.

The Roman Empire fell to corruption and decadence, and telling various groups whatever pretty lies they want to hear, rather than uncomfortable but necessary truths of our terminal capitalism driven social, economic, and environmental collapse falls firmly under that umbrella.

The first step to staving off such a collapse would be mass recognition of the problem, and since no one with power and few without are even willing to entertain that reality, collapse it is.

The quest for RECKLESS growth/metastasis is quite literally ushering in a new dark age of glorified ignorance.

This is just capitalism. NBC wants to give the ignorant right what they want to hear to grow their profits for their private shareholders. Nothing wrong with indulging the profit motive, amirite? /s

This isn’t being done because of the fires of fascist hatred, though it will assist the fascists. No, this is collapse by the detached, sociopathic ice of unapologetic, insatiable greed, our society’s absolute core value which is every bit as destructive as hate, and historically far more effective at accomplishing and maintaining that destruction generationally. A fascist will murder you, but a capitalist will keep you, your children, and your children’s children in subservient subsistence, and they don’t even care to know the demographics of their victims.

  • I appreciate that, sincerely.

I’ll never forget what elevated him into mainstream discourse, a game show literally about “I’m rich, so kiss my ass for half an hour” that somehow made him popular. You aren’t supposed to like Gordon Gecko/Mr. Potter. They are to be hissed for their antisocial greed. Our people celebrate it. Many who hate him for his violent rhetoric today still loved him for his proud celebration of greed then.

I’ll also never forget what singular event took him from paying extras to attend his rallies to basically owning the Republican party:

“We’re not allowed to punch back any more,” Trump lamented. The billionaire said he missed the “good old days,” “You know what they used to do to a guy like that in a place like this?” Trump said. “They’d be carried out on a stretcher, folks.”

He’s a fucking monster, yes. But what does that say about US that the above elevated him, through public popularity, to basically being worshipped as a God(GodEmperor as some called him) by 40% of the electorate, while making still more consider his message?

  • I’m voting for Biden, as I did last time and Clinton before, but I can’t help some dark part of me knowing he does represent the US and is practically our mascot.

The embodiment of greed and gluttony, reveling in schadenfreude, cartoonishly shameless, crowing about who he beat and who he’s enjoying the suffering of, and drunk on wholly undeserved vanity. A sociopath who stands against the very concept of empathy for others. If someone is suffering, he’ll tell you what they did to deserve their suffering and suggest ways to really turn the screws. 🇺🇸

I’m ashamed of being an American precisely for all the American traits, that are also destroying us from the inside btw, that Trump unironically personifies. He’s more American as America actually is, not all the pretty lies we say about ourselves, than Apple pies or school shootings.

I wish more Americans would look in the mirror that is Donald Trump and be ashamed of who we are, because we can’t begin to do anything without recognizing what monstrous values we have.
