The part you’re studiously ignoring is plenty of people saying yes, you could do this, but that it’s wildly inefficient. You could also power a bike by getting the biggest rock you could throw, tying a rope to it, applying the brakes on your bike, throwing the rock, releasing the brakes, and then pulling on the rope until you’ve collected your rock, and repeating until you’ve reached your destination. This will always work. But as long as your bike is in earthlike conditions, there will always be easier ways to do it. This is also the case for your idea.
Distillation doesn’t have to be of water. Not all impurities are solid. And the evaporated water does go back into the water pool, just with steps we aren’t directly involved in.
This is simple math. We would need to increase our energy production by 1000 times to just treat water, maybe only 250 times if we used more efficient systems than simply heating it and letting the heat dissipate. If we doubled our energy production every year, it would still take a decade to do it (8 years if we were aiming at 250 times). That isn’t a realistic amount for a civilization at our tech level.

While you aren’t wrong overall, heat exchangers and heat pumps could drastically reduce the energy requirements, perhaps getting the energy requirements down to 4 or even 2 times the national capacity. This doesn’t means that it’s impossible, it just changes how impossible. It also doesn’t change that there would be cheaper ways than just heating all the water, or that those ways would also be cheaper with more efficient heat management systems.

I had someone at work ask me if I was an expert at Excel. I’ve written macros in VBA and made formulas that would have been easier as a macro so I could save them as xlsx instead of xlsm. I said yes, with some hesitation. She asked me if I could help her with a problem and I said sure. The problem was a bunch of hidden cells. At least it wasn’t a bunch of data she’d deleted and wanted me to get back for her.
The amazing part was how hard it was to show the cells in the latest version of Excel.
Just checked it on F-droid. Last updated 13 months ago. This is a fork of another project whose creator walked back the FOSS stance of his projects. Forks were immediately produced, but no real work has been done. I’m using two of these apps, and have no real hope that they will be maintained in any meaningful way.
I’d explore these with caution, unless you’re looking for near-abandoned projects to adopt, in which case these may be worth your time to look into. What is there looks good, but without active maintenance it’s an encroaching storm of security risks.

I haven’t done anything with Wireguard, and less than I’d like with HA, but I think the solution here might work for you. His reasons are different, and he has some criteria that vary from yours, and it’s for HA Green, but it’s done by creating an add-on so it should work for any HA install without direct access to config files or systemd. Hope it helps.
To tack on this. She definitely needs therapy, classic trauma-based coping mechanisms, and the depression may be because of that or exacerbating that. I’d also say, due to natural biases, that we may not have as much negative info on him, but that’s okay.
I think he’s almost done and she’s either almost done or done. Probably the best option is to get out sooner with a little less drama and take some lessons from this. The alternative is to keep trying to fix it until all feeling is gone, then break up with a nicely burned bridge in the background.
This is pretty much me. Used RIF, when it stopped working, I stopped going there regularly. Took a couple weeks to completely kick the habit, and a year of occasional use via search engines, never even bothering to log in. Now I almost never go there. I’ll head there as a last resort if a search engine can’t find me a useful alternative for what I’m looking for.
