Let’s talk about organizing a Belgian community on the threadiverse (the reddit-like side of the fediverse).
Right now, the community isn’t coordinated, there are multiple spaces that popped up after the blackout. There’s this one, there’s @Belgium@kbin.social, there’s c/belgique, I think there’s one on lemmy.ml too?
What do you guys think we should do? How should we reach out? Discuss!
I think it’s more of a survival of the fittest kinda thing on the fediverse. Whichever is the most active and has the most interesting content will be the most popular. That’s also the beauty of it. Fuck up and people will move on to another instance and start over. In case of smaller communities like this one it’s up to the mods to get things started and find ways to engage with subscribers so they come back and start posting. That’s why I asked for some extra mods, which have now been appointed. We have 4 at the moment and that seems enough for now.
I love kbin’s look but I recently saw a meme about the frontpage of kbin being almost exclusively filled with Lemmy content. I think that wasn’t far off. Content-wise there is much more going on on Lemmy.
I totally agree with that. I prefer lemme right now since it’s the only one with working mobile apps, we can wait for the kbin mobile apps too but I feel like lemme will be always one step ahead in that regard since the kbin apps are just starting to develop while we have several lemmy apps. I just don’t know how to invite people over, seems a bit wrong to go and say “hey join our server instead of yours”
Sure, let me know where to go
Personally, I think that it would be beneficial to consolidate as much as possible in one place. 5 communities with 10 people will quickly die out, 1 community with 50 is a good start for something long-term.
Agreed, being spread out isn’t the best way forward. I’m subscribed to this one and the one at kbin.social at the moment, waiting to see which one takes off the most.
Agree!
Next Saturday, July 1st, a new Reddit migration wave could happen when the API policy is activated without significant changes.
It would be great if we could give r/Belgium visitors a clear target in the Fediverse to move to.@belgium@lemmy.world is the best candidate now IMO, as it has multiple moderators assigned already and more activity than @Belgium.
I’ve registered on Kbin myself, but Kbin doesn’t have a mobile app yet, while Lemmy does (https://join-lemmy.org/apps/).
Therefore, I think we should have the “official” community on Lemmy (so Reddit users can visit the community through an app).
Kbin users can see the Lemmy posts through federation.I don’t know if we have any of the original r/Belgium mods here, but having @belgium mentioned under “Official” on https://sub.rehab/?searchTerm=belgium (endorsement of the original mods is needed) would be a great start. Or at least under spin-offs.
Please upvote or comment if you agree with me.
PS. @Mysteriarch You are the moderator of @Belgium? Maybe you can redirect users to this server instead?
I’m not a moderator on kbin.social, no. I have an account like many to look for another community. We could make a posts there to refer people to this instance of course.
Not entirely sure if lemmy.world is the best candidate, because the instance is a bit too large to my liking and has been defederated by some instances. But I also recognize that many other users would find the size reassuring, so I won’t object.
I did hear that the mods of r/belgium made a Discord channel (shudder) for the blackout, someone could also promote the lemmy instance there. I don’t really use Discord so I’ll leave that up to others.
I also don’t know any r/belgium mods personally, but would be cool to have them at least active as users here. Again, feel free to reach out to those you know and get them involved.
If the moderators of /r/Belgium decide to move here we can ofcourse give them a mod spot too.
On the !Belgium@kbin.social there is not much going on and this community is already linked there as a related magazine. I think the people on kbin will find their way.
Since the /r/belgium subreddit is now private - I reached out to them. Sent a message about what we wanted to do here and that they’re welcome to join here and that a mod status is open too.
Since I see there is interest here in getting some kind of interaction going, I can join the /r/belgium discord later and try to talk to someone.
In the end it’s up to them if they want to do their own thing that’s fine too ofcourse.
Edit: I reached out to the /r/belgium admins on their discord channel and pointed them to this thread too.
