Something I don’t see being talked about, in english speaking media at least, is that the recent shift back to concentrated armored maneuver warfare by Russia is as good confirmation as any that the rising availability of artillery support for Ukraine is a devastating counter to dispersed broad poorly supported infantry assaults Russia has been trying to sell (along with the western media in my opinion) as the “future” of warfare.

It isn’t, rather it is simply the easiest most brute force way to beat a numerically inferior military that does not have enough artillery support.

Well, that period is essentially over and now to defeat the unsustainable attrition artillery has on slow moving isolated infantry assaults Russia is being forced back into needing to conduct concentrated armored manuever to overwhelm defenses and send artillery racing in retreat. Needless to say Russia has very little capacity for this at this point of the war.

(there are of course other factors for this shift too!)

Fire support of defending troops occurs when artillery battalions attack enemy forces penetrating the defensive positions of first-echelon maneuver battalions. The purpose of fire support is to canalize the enemy and to prevent him from developing the attack further into friendly positions. Some batteries may enter preselected direct fire positions. The defender fires against individual targets as well as using fire concentrations and barrage fires.

The OPFOR expects the enemy to penetrate the defense but to pay a heavy price in losses and momentum and be canalized. The artillery supports defensive positions in depth and disrupts the enemy by separating his infantry from armor and his fighting troops from their logistics support. If necessary, artillery can use direct fire as a backstop against armored penetrations. Generally, artillery plays a key role in creating suitable conditions for the launching of a counterattack or counterstrike.
