“We will deliver additional Aster missiles, new training programs, and new Mirage aircraft in the coming days. It is essential to continue our efforts to support Ukraine and to increase pressure on Russia,” he said.

There is no exact information on the number of aircraft to be transferred. According to various estimates, Ukraine is to receive 12 to 20 Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets.

Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) is the most important mission undertaken by the ‘Dash 5’ detachments located in various bases such as Istres or Lann-Bihoué. Under the responsibility of NATO, the same mission is regularly performed from the Baltic States. “The Mirage 2000 was designed with the QRA mission in mind,” insists Capt Maxime, an experienced pilot with 3,100 flying hours to his credit, including 2,200 in the ‘Deux Mille’.

It is easy to operate and it can take off very rapidly. Dassault Aviation engineers did everything they could to shorten takeoff delays – there is no auxiliary power unit to start and inertial navigation system alignment takes just 1min 30secs. “It takes only 20 to 30 seconds to start and spool up the engine, and we have only one to start…” says Maxime. “With prior warning, or if the situation requires it, we can sit on board the aircraft and follow the developing situation via a dedicated network or via the radio. Pressing the ‘magic switch’ will then allow us to take off in under two minutes.”
