Google’s Pixel 10 works with AirDrop, and other phones should follow later.

There’s the research project OpenDrop from a few years ago:

      https://github.com/seemoo-lab/opendrop

(Disclaimer: I had a student job at SEEMOO and wrote my thesis there, though I was not involved with OpenDrop)

Upvote for disclaimers like this. We need more people who openly share potential conflicts of interest:)

Is this really a case of conflict of interest though?

It’s a potential one. Rather people flag anything that could be a conflict of interest, whether they think it is or not. Than be silent about it.

Which is great, but it doesn’t solve the interoperability problem of being able to AirDrop files between someone’s iPhone/MacBook and your Linux/Android

Okay, but it is a good alternative to it that works cross platform without workarounds.

So yes it doesn’t solve that specific problem but it is a good alternative to AirDrop.

Hopefully this workaround is allowed to continue, but we’ll see.

Yeah, which is what I said. It’s great, but an alternative solution is an alternative solution. If someone is sharing a file to a group with Airdrop, you are not receiving it with localsend.

Android already had WiFi Direct, this change just brings Apple and Android into the same sharing room.

I never need to send files or data from my phone to someone else’s phone. All the files I care about are on my PC.

I’m not saying AirDrop or Quick Share are useless. I’m saying I don’t use them, but do understand they’re used, and I’m glad the support exists now soon.

But Quick Share isn’t actually part of AOSP is it? :(

Looks like everyone will have to implement this for themselves and it’ll be a mess.

The manufacturer of the phone obviously needs to actually implement it. So if your phone is old and not using an up to date OS or if they just disable the feature, then it wont work.
