So, I bought a house that just happens to have a flagpole. It was put in by the neighbor’s grandfather back when he owned the property like 60 years ago. I recently dug it up and painted it, replaced the hardware, etc. I’ve been flying the US flag to keep same Republican neighbor happy, but after this weekend’s events, that’s not happening any more.
So, I’ve been pondering what flag to fly instead. It doesn’t appear that my town has a flag, though my county and state do. I considered the United Federation of Planets flag, but it looks too much like the UN flag and I don’t need to hear John Birch from that same neighbor. Ditto the Earth flag.
Maybe the Jolly Roger? Anybody else have a fun flag they think I should fly instead?
For some reason having a flag of any group / org always feels like an extreme radical support. To the point when it looks bad no matter what the flag is promoting.
I feel like this is due to flags providing too little information on your actual views and just screams “I love X”. In reality it’s always better to properly explain why do you actually like that and what parts of it aren’t that good. Because there is always something not that good. In a perfect world flags would work if they act as a conversation starter about your actual views and opinions. But in real world people don’t often ask those questions and just make assumptions.
I would actually make a flag that says “I love X. Let’s talk about why” to help ignite those conversations instead of making assumptions.
