Fork time? Maybe all the anti-systemd zealots were right all along…
Edit: To address whether it is likely that this change will affect users: Gnome is planning a stronger dependence on userdb, the part of systemd where this change is being implemented. https://blogs.gnome.org/adrianvovk/2025/06/10/gnome-systemd-dependencies/
Final edit: The PR has been merged into main.

Sorry, but you are freaking out about nothing.
This is just a field to save the date and potentially make it available to applications. Systemd won’t enforce it - this is the job of the OS implementing it.
Unless a linux distro actively enforces it, it’s kind of a big nothing burger. And that would most likely be the death of that distro.
Let whatever shitty OS wants to add that garbage do it themselves. Also, legislators should SystemDeezNutz!
I said it a few times already, but some OS based in US WON’T have a choice. Nobody will want to get fined or go to prison because they don’t want to add that functionality into their product. That has nothing to do with “shitty” OS - it’s a fucking law at that point.
Stop being mad at the OS affected by the law, be mad at the law and the people that enact it for fucks sake.
This is the first step before enforcing anything.
That’s why we’re freaking out.
Stop it before is lays eggs.
Why would it be the death of the distro when you’ll be back here complaining that it’s a nothingburger?
