I was browsing through /all and had the misfortune of finding a transphobic post from the site. Blocked user and community but if that’s an indication of what they’re putting out, hard pass on the rest of it.

It’s a thing. There’s nothing less attractive than having to play parent to an adult who can’t pull their own weight in managing a household.
Can’t recognize that a full trash can needs to go out without being told? Can’t realize dishwashers that are full need to be run without reminding? Can’t find where clothes need to go when they’re clean?
If that workload is falling on one person most of the time, over time it can become a source of resentment.
When both people have full time jobs, it’s like coming home to a second job.
No, that’s on me for not closely looking at who I was replying to in thread.
Edit: I should not be multitasking, it’s not my thing
It started with a discussion on sh.itjustworks, but due to the open nature of federation, anyone can wander in to the discussion, as you can see with input from users outside our instance.
There was some confusion, some trolling, but I think if as a user you weren’t really active in our Main or Agora communities it may not have been something you would have been aware of, if that makes sense.
Honestly in my experience, most (I’d say as close to all as you can get) of sh.itjustworks users are really just here to chill and make an awesome experience.
Genuine apologies, as that’s not my intent.
We’ve had what has seemed (to me) an influx of just really bad faith and downright trolling type stuff going down recently and it’s perhaps colored my take on things more than I realized, and it probably has for others as well.
We really did just come here for the chill vibe, read the thing, and were like “yeah, this works for me.”
Other things may get added to that block list in the future, yes. I pointed you to the Agora because you may not, as a new user, be aware of it, as the Dude set it up as the place where these kinds of decisions will most likely be made in the future and where community discussions tend to be focused.
However, as a Canadian based instance, they have different laws on what does and doesn’t put them at risk, so there are times where those calls may be his and his to make alone (which is why there are two where there was only one on the list of defederated).
I was definitely of the check the comments to see if the article was worth the click mentality. Too much clickbait and spam to bother otherwise.
However, one thing I’m hesitant to do here is start the conversation when it’s just an article with no comment or commentary given. I tend to just read and move on.
It’s like “oh, that’s interesting,” and then I’m on to the next thing.
You’re asking a person with a day job who is doing a cool thing for the fediverse community and set up a community in sh.itjustworks (Agora) to handle these possible future blocks to give you a granular breakdown of the blocking of one instance in a justification they don’t really owe you.
The community itself is trying to be chill and just vibe. If what we’re doing fits what you’re looking for, welcome.
Personally, I came to sh.itjustworks because when choosing a server the message was “these more popular servers aren’t taking new people, go elsewhere.”
It said that there would be no bigotry tolerated and I took that at face value and it generally aligned with what I was looking for otherwise and was accepting new users, so I signed up.
I can’t speak for others.
Now how that’s evolving (Agora, etc) so it’s a work in progress and you’re right, things aren’t necessarily moving on a timeline that suits everyone (including me) because many people are not used to situations where we’re having to figure it out as we go along, so here we are.
I think I’ve seen at least six different user names depending on the thread, including Agora threads.
It’s absolutely all done in bad faith.
I don’t know but it seems that this particular community didn’t exist until the dust-up regarding explodingheads and the discussions that have occurred afterward, including the Agora vote.
So, to me it seems that it was started in retaliation to that particular discussion/event.
The active user at the core continually changes their display name, making it more difficult to know that you’re replying to the same person unless you’re checking the account, as they only mod the one community.
That alone makes it bad faith or trolling, however you want to phrase it, and it seems both the user and the community are at odds with the overall environment that many users came to this instance for.
I think it actively hampers the conversation we were having with beehaw regarding refederation, and don’t disagree with their observation in the matter.
Yes, we as users can block them. And?
Call it growing pains call it whatever you’d like but I think that ignoring the larger context behind why it’s here and here now is missing the point of why “just block it as a user” isn’t the ideal solution.
Honestly I’m still trying to get over my lurker habits. They’re very hard to break.
This is the way.
Given that one of the rules for the server is no bigotry, I would assume that extends to the ones we federate with from what I read.
“Shit just works”, but that’s just because I came here when others were overwhelmed, so…
For me it was the sign up process and the questions (I am much more lurker inclined) and the “We’re overloaded, please look elsewhere.” type messages and I admit, my first post was in the low stakes cats community to minimize discomfort.
I suppose I was trying to show support that yes, there are others of us here that are still learning (I deleted my post accidentally and was delighted to find out that clicking the trash can again brought it back!) as well as to pick up knowledge as a new user also.
Thank you for the tip about undetermined! That explains all the German posts I’m seeing. I’m not -that- fluent!
So, I’m on a different instance - https://sh.itjust.works/ - and as the name says, at least for me, it has just worked. It’s been very easy for me to understand with the interface. For looking for communities (that are not on ours or that may have more people/interaction/more established to join I have used https://browse.feddit.de/ and I have successfully joined ones that are on other instances (apologies if my terminology is not right!). I have set it to “all” and it shows me posts from all the other places that are on our list we are associated with, as I understand it.
I have also used Jerboa for mobile app browsing (I believe it is Mlem for iOS)
Aaaaand then I mess up, so still learning!
Yeah, you’re not winning points by becoming aggressive with the people who you want on your side.
This isn’t Reddit, and that’s kind of the point. I do want higher standards here and the way to make your point is with words, not slurs.
Bring receipts. Link posts if that’s your thing, screenshots if you want.
I took a screenshot of what and who I found objectionable, which I am willing to share, however I won’t post it publicly because it’s (to me) hate speech.
