It’s a shame because my 11yo laptop runs beautifully on X11 but terribly on Wayland with KDE. I hope the issues with Wayland optimization work out on my laptop before I’m forced to switch

I was on EndeavourOS for a couple of years and now I’m just on vanilla Arch with KDE and I also couldn’t imagine just dumping all of my knowledge and problem solving workflow by jumping to a different distro or architecture. I certainly can’t see myself ever using Windows again. It’s very weird to imagine that if I ever wanted a flagship computer I would probably buy an Apple.

Yes and it treats fungal infections in tree frogs. I’m not trying to say that these medicines work the way that Gibson is saying they do, but the whole “horse dewormer” talking point is dishonest as it makes it out like these medicines have only a single use. Something else, all of the GNU coreutils have their own info [command] terminal command, and often the info page is incredibly easy to read, full of example pages and highly granular descriptions of flags, error messages, and the like.

Absolutely agree, the wholeapt-get upgrade (or however, I always messed it up!) was annoying to me, and I switched to an arch distro (Endeavour) and I’m super happy with it. It’s my only machine and it is awesome

Sorry you had a hard time with it friend. I hated Ubuntu Cinnamon, and when I switched to EndeavourOS my experience greatly improved, but I also am a tinkerer and I enjoy using command line.

I have no idea why your experience has been so cursed, but there is definitely a lot of GUI work to do to get the Linux QOL out of the box at a suitable level for people who don’t care about tinkering and daemons and update scripts.

I really think there is no problem here. There is one side that screeches, “We need more people in Lemmy! Lemmy is too obscure and hard to use! We need better UX and less techno-babble when people are trying to sign on!” We also have the opposite side saying, “Fuck the normies! I want my federated server @tek.know.kult for the most austere obscurantists only!”

Let’s be real, guys. If your federated server is weird and obscure, the normals are not going to really encounter it, and they’re not that into all the federation beef. I would say I am at least on the right side of the bell curve when it comes to tech literacy, maybe even the top quartile, and I only sort of understand how the Fediverse works, and no offense guys, I don’t really care that much. I looked at Reddit for the funny memes and to rage at news stories, and when they took my favorite app away (Sync for Reddit), I couldn’t be fucked to get advert-aids on the official app, so I jumped ship. Lemmy is just a bit less engaging, just a bit less addictive, and frankly I’m perfectly happy with that. Huzzah for having a bit more of a doomscroll-life balance.

People will come along with FOSS as well as CS options for joining the Fediverse, things like Threads and Voyager and BlueSky, and the culture of Lemmy will shift likewise. The great news is that with Federation, it will be easy to create islands of autists and weirdos to keep their purity cults as funny as they want them to be, and I think that’s beautiful.

Endeavour has been an amazing distro for me, noob Linuxer. I started on Ubuntu Cinnamon, then tried Mint, and ended here on Endeavour and I love it.

I gotta sic syncthing on one of my old laptops running a crusty out of date Windows version and once it’s all backed up I’m going to install this on it, I’m excited to try it out! I have not personally tried a RHE distro before so it will be interesting to experience.
