Technically, no. In fact, if you want to be a stickler for details, it was actually 8 sentences, not five, and it was absolutely longer than a minute, but I encouraged the class to help him. It’s a 1-2 week ESL program in the Mediterranean, and he was an Italian 12 year old who likely signed up for girls on beaches than speak English. The Italian government is apparently paying students’ ways into programs like the one I teach at in order to improve general English proficiency across the country, so we end up with a lot of kids who just come to party.

You’re right on that I should have taken his phone away sooner, but he was the weakest student in class. Three of his sentences were the same sentence said more and more poorly each time. Not sure what he thought he was getting away with there. Of course I did a peer correction check of his presentation and had him do it again.

I usually let my students keep their devices, but I had one student… I had asked everyone to write 5 sentences about a made up place. The kid was on his phone, showing things to his classmates while assuring me he was doing his work. Everyone finished but him, with nothing. I let every other student share their answers first to buy him time, then when it was his turn, nothing. I took away his phone and he had it done in less than a minute.

Well one or two other people doesn’t sound too promising, so I get the concern. If you do get curious, I would consider making a post on one of the main kbin magazines probing if people are interested in helping crowd-fund an apple dev account for you. $100 isn’t all that steep when a group is involved. A lot of the fediverse apps have optional in-app purchases as well that are just for tips and donations, so if you get something on the App Store, particularly if it’s the ONLY kbin app there, it might be a little easier to get it to keep itself afloat.

I don’t know anything about programming, economics, or app development though, so feel free to completely ignore me. Also, don’t do anything to make your life any more stressful than it needs to be. If you do decide to crowd-fund, however, I will be happy to toss a few bucks in for you.

I would venture a guess there are at least 50 kbin users willing to pay $2 a year for a dedicated kbin/mbin app on iOS. I personally gave some money to the developer of Artemis back when she was active, but I have no idea what became of her.

Without a doubt, but it hasn’t stopped a cornucopia of lemmy apps from cropping up on iOS.

I still keep Social on my Home Screen, but I’ve been using Run for a while now. I’m also starting to use lemmy world a bit more because I’m tired of waiting for a dedicated iOS app. I’ve seen like 3 come and go now and I just don’t think it’s going to happen anymore.

Namely, the fact that Apple charges a “Core Technology Fee” for developers who want to “steer” users to offers outside of its App Store. There’s also an additional 3% that goes to Apple if a developer uses its payment processor.

It took some time to dig that esper out of the ground, but now that it’s out, I presume we’ll see some significant performance gains.

I enjoy MacOS, but I’ve got an ancient Intel Mac mini with upgraded storage and RAM back at the in-laws that I had been using as a server. Now that I’ve had the pleasure of a steam deck, I’d like to turn it into a dedicated Linux machine whenever I get the chance to grab it. It’s long past its expiration date as a Mac machine.
