But now the new reality is setting in and people are actually having real and meaningful conversations, which means more lurkers.

I have to say, well written article (too bad they only mentioned Beehaw and not Lemmin). Reddit cannot exist without user content and more importantly the moderators who do a hard job for free.

Without moderators, subreddits simply become a free for all, the far west.

The problem with North America is that it is closed to trying new things because it believes that its way of doing things is better than the rest of the world.

For example, roundabouts could help with traffic flow and reduce accidents, as they have been proven to do in the rest of the world. But unfortunately, North American drivers are absolutely terrified of them, so cities will not implement them.

Long story short, Beehaw is a heavily moderated instance and said that Lemmy didn’t have strong moderation tools yet. So for the time being, they have defederated.

What you’re mentioning is key. Lemmy is exploding right now. Imagine when all third-party apps cease working… It’s gonna be crazy.

On the contrary, I think it’s a good protest. It shows that for a subreddit to thrive, the support of the moderators is key. They need to have the right tools for the job and be supported by Reddit. Otherwise the content will be shitty and not worth it for the shareholders.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we have a choice. In this capitalist society, money is key to get things moving forward.
