I never found “all” browsable for any platform whether it be lemmy, YouTube, or reddit. It’s why subscribing has been so important to me, and filtering. Like on YouTube which I access through freetube I’ve disabled “trending” and “popular” since even the thumbnails were obnoxious for majority of the videos, and I blocked out channels to keep them from dominating search results. And on reddit what even made /r/all viewable was a reddit enhancement suite filter lists that was in the hundreds for blocking of communities, and even then was a wack a mole that required keyword filtering.

All of any platform will devolve into a shit show. As for niche subs. Yeah, not much that can be done about that if the user base is small.

  • Twitch is live streaming which is what probably makes it a challenge to block ads, and the main draw of twitch is watching live content. I’d imagine it’s easier to view content that isn’t live without ads, and people do repost clips after it’s aired where people haven’t encountered ads in contrast to live viewers.

Then look at television piracy where live viewing will have ads, but pirated content is uploaded with it stripped away. Blocking ads will be something YouTube will have to keep fighting endlessly.

  • Strong ideologically driven instances may be more invested in spreading the gospel, so depending on the frequency of posts that populate /c/all and topics that garner a lot of attention it can lead to certain instances standing out compared to more generic ones. It’s kind of becomes like someone sporting a sports jersey versus others that might just be more generic clothing as an example.

Maybe better example might be like how people assume things by the bumper stickers people have on their cars, or signs and flags they choose to display in front of their houses compared to the general neighborhood. There’s some passion that may be assumed.
