Yeah, my point isn’t that F360 sucks or that FreeCAD is awesome, it’s that basically no one uses either of these apps in the grand scheme of things. Doing CAD is just not something most people do. To be honest, the same goes for Photoshop which is another often-touted point, as though even a small percentage of PC users ever go near Photoshop!
if you’re squeamish about flashing custom recoveries and ROMs, the e.g. pmOS install process is way, way, way more involved and failure prone. if you go with ubuntu touch or mobian, even more so.
What?? PmOS and Ubuntu Touch both have very easy, foolproof installers. No idea about Mobian to be fair.
I’ve been using only Linux-based mobile OS’s since my first smartphone, and while you’re right for a lot of the new breed made for the Pinephone and Librem, Sailfish OS and Ubuntu Touch are both perfectly useable for lots of people. Both have a decent app ecosystem and both support running Android apps to fill in the gaps (I’ve used both, the proprietary Jolla one is about as good as it gets and is practically seamless for like 99% of Android apps).
Of course there’s going to be people who will respond to me to say they can’t possibly switch because of that one app that they and 5 other people in the world use, as though they’re in any way relevant to what I’ve said. Just the same as when I post about people switching to Linux on the desktop and there’s always that one Fusion 360 user who thinks everyone in the world also uses Fusion and so Linux can’t possibly ever work for anyone.
I have a laptop with a SIM slot and I can use mobile data, SMS and even make voice calls. It doesn’t support 5G though. Also the mobile hardware is crap, and I get like a 10th of the speed over 4G that I do on my phone, plus it chews through battery.
So yeah, awesome feature but not as nicely implemented as I’d like. Hopefully the Thinkpad version is better!

I’m really curious to see what their regular mouse is like purely so I can recommend it to others (The amount of people I show my Classic to and they’re immediately put off because it’s a ball not a rodent is crazy). Wish there were more to choose from as well but I’m glad at least someone is doing it!
Ploopy mice are a real thing and run QMK. I have their Classic trackball and it’s an absolute beast

Another unsung nicety related to this one is that you can fully update your system but only start using it once you reboot. Too many times I updated the kernel on Arch only to find everything stopped working until I rebooted, hence why routine updates can just be done automatically with no issues to the user.
Yeah this pretty much. Why would I drive a car? it’s a huge waste of money for absolutely no benefit to my life.
I’ve considered learning/getting my licence just to have it “just in case”, that way at least if that once every few years thing comes up where I absolutely need a car and a taxi just won’t cut it, I can hire one or something? but it’s just kind of not come up yet.
What kind of battery life do you actually get? I can barely scrape a fully day out of my phone right now so anything similar to that is fine by me!

It’s not like you’re outside for long enough for your feet to get manky. If there’s dirt on them just brush it off on your doormat and carry on. The point of not wearing shoes inside for me is comfort, not cleanliness!

If I’m going on a bike ride then yes, I put shoes on (I’m not “changing shoes”, because I had no shoes on to begin with). If I’m doing something quick outside like taking the trash out, I’ll either just stay barefoot or maybe slip something like Crocs on if they’re close by enough to be convenient. You know if your skin touches the ground outside, it’ll be fine right? It also dries way faster than a sock or a shoe if you go out in the rain. It’s entirely fine.
Yeah just looked it up and that’s exactly what I was thinking of! Aside from the obvious technical limitations and the part where you probably couldn’t teach average Joes to parachute reliably, I imagine the simple act of getting everyone to actually jump out of a plane is probably immeasurably difficult too. Like I know people who won’t even walk across certain bridges because their fear of heights just won’t allow it, getting someone like that to muster the courage to jump would be impossible.
The other main thing that kills the feature for me is having to have a second SIM. if I could somehow have two SIM’s on the same unlimited contract I use for my phone, it’d obviously be a no-brainer. but I really don’t want to be paying an extra £20/month just so I can avoid tethering.
