I’m going to assume you’re not Irish and don’t actually understand this because Christ you are inconsolable

I’m not going to argue further with this aggressive babble. We had issues with Northern Ireland very recently and I do not want any of that to come back any time soon. Brexit didn’t do shit, those tensions have been around for decades. It’s absurd that you think I’m the one disconnected from the situation when in Ireland, Mary Lou has been lambasted for these reunification comments. And no, they don’t want to leave the UK. Go to Northern Ireland. It’s a strange place with strange people, and what they want is not what you want.
What does it achieve to unify now? A sizeable portion of the population actively opposes it, and besides that the Northern Irish economy is largely dependent on the British government, meaning that there would be significant cost to the Irish state were they to begin managing the north counties. They chose a century ago to remain in the UK and despite an almost complete lack of acknowledgment from the general British population fiercely defend that decision. It’s about more than just religion, though that can be a common grouping of the different factions.
Reunification is an insane idea that the moment. No need to risk the violence of the past for nationalist dreams.
If this doesn’t trigger massive arrests and legal reform then the Garda will have truly shown themselves as ineffective.
I understand, similar to Northern Cyprus.
There were no inhabitants of the Falklands before the British and French showed up. It’s not at all like Israel, and for Argentina to colonise the Falklands would be unjustifiable colonialism.
I can’t believe this is a real comment
Of course. There’s no need to place your trust in free press when you can just follow whatever you want! We all know authoritarians have the most accurate journalism.
Pakis might not be the best word to use
If I’m reading this correctly, it seems to suggest that Gérald has organised the trials mostly because the defendants are strongly left-wing. Given how much more of a threat fascists are throughout Europe- why? What is the point of creating trials against the groups that aren’t responsible?
This comment looks so scuffed on Lemmy
Pope Francis honestly seems like a well-intentioned fellow, and the anger he causes among the more extreme catholics is delightful.
It’s not as if religions have been peaceful in all that time, is it
Of course, crime is higher in a more unequal, less stable country. And guns are not the only means of committing crime. But the difference that guns make is noticeable when comparing to countries that share a similar HDI, that are stable and have lower reason to commit crime. That’s why I mentioned Britain earlier, as it’s one of the more similar countries to the US. I do concede that whilst gun deaths are higher in America relative to Western Europe, perchance a large proportion of the difference (but certainly not all) can be attributed to the more aggressive culture.
I get what you’re saying, but it doesn’t feel right to compare the US to places like Brazil over European countries. Given their vast wealth and semi-democratic institutions, there’s a lot more capability to change these kinds of things than in poorer and more corrupt countries. Also, no to comparing US states to countries. We don’t do that for any other country. Probably best to compare the states to Britain, given that they are the America of Europe.
It’s great that New Zealand is so dedicated to protecting their lovely birds, if only every country was like that.
More so unchecked authoritarianism in this case, one would hope that even in places like the US they wouldn’t just bulldoze cultural sites for ‘progress’. Keep in mind that this Egyptian fellow recently built the world’s tallest flagpole, and if you look at the list of record heights there’s a bit of a pattern
Estonia I believe
Mate they made Northern Ireland in an election
