No worries, they just elected a guy that said drinking bleach and irradiating people from the inside would be a good idea to deal with viruses and bacteria.
Indigenous Canadian from northern Ontario. Believe in equality, Indigenous rights, minority rights, LGBTQ+, women’s rights and do not support war of any kind.

lol … classic GIMP … this is becoming the best part of a terrible day
GIMP 3.0 has kinda sorta maybe been released but they’re still working on it
lol … this will be one for the memory books
American loses their minds … for the 100th time … on the same day as GIMP 3.0 was released

None … but if I had had a relative or friend tell me a story that someone had buried something there 50 years ago, I would have taken the time to dig it up while I was tearing down walls or breaking concrete.
Thanks for the detailed explanation … now I know not to rely on usb for extremely long term storage … never understood how they worked until I read your comment.
It makes me wonder … what long term storage would be the best option for storing digital information … like to store something for 100 or 200 years? Anything beyond that and I would just rely on writing something in stone and burying it.
A time capsule
Place photos and some small objects maybe even a usb key, dvdr or cdr with a video of you explaining everything and telling the viewer who you are, what year it is, what’s going on and what’s important to you right now. Place it all in a water tight container, maybe even an iron case and weld it shut.
If you have small kids, tell them what you’re doing and show them … maybe they or their kids or your descendants might dig it up some day.
Of all the places I’ve renovated, I would have enjoyed finding something from someone else’s life.
By remembering and being fully aware of who you are in this world … by being grateful for the good fortune you had by being born in the situation and family you have now.
You could have been born in an African village and lived for a year before dying of something. You could have been born in the slums of Mumbai. You could have been born in Gaza. You could also remove the time constraint and you could have been born a peasant in medieval Europe.
Out of all the billions of human lives that have existed so far, there are many that were born during this time but only a small percentage of them were lucky enough to be born in a family with wealth and privilege enough to enjoy the modern technologies we’ve created so far.
I am lucky, you are lucky and anyone who is able to read this is lucky to have been born at this time to enjoy this online chat.
Remember where you are in this world and this time. As unhappy as you think you might be, there are millions of people that wish they could have the life you have now.
Be happy because you are a winner of the cosmic lottery of existence.
Fuck that’s depressing
Reminds of a quote about rape during war time from a writer … I think it was Vonnegut but I forget
“There are two types of women in war … those that were raped … and those that will be raped”
Of all the supposed civilization and modernization that we claim to uphold as a species … the fact that this is still part of our world means that we are no more civilized then we were a thousand years ago, we just have computers, fast cars and nuclear weapons.
Most people (including myself) would like to agree with you on building some sort of system to create credibility or honesty or reliability among people on a social media platform. I think the majority of people that use any social media (including Lemmy) would probably agree and more than likely would participate in it.
Unfortunately, it only takes a small group of people to upset the system, game the system, play with the system or create situations or systems of their own to manipulate everything … either to fight against others, or to generate some sort of power or control of their own. All it would take is this small group to completely change everything and make everything difficult and non functional.
It’s a lot like the democratic system of government. When you think about it the majority of everyone would like to participate in it and make it work … unfortunately, its only a small group of powerful individuals who have gamed the system to give themselves and their friends power over everyone else.
You can also download the image and repost it to a lemmy instance like I’m doing here … then no one has to go back to the old site
Well! … this is a silly conversation!
It’s not so much that it’s AI generated … it’s also AI influenced.
I know so many professional office workers who once wrote some of the most boring sometimes stupid emails because they didn’t know how to write or get their message across or constantly miscommunicated things because they worded things wrong … now all of a sudden they’ve become professional writers and all their emails look like auto generated messages.
I’m guessing that many writers also take the AI shortcut. They get a bunch of content generated from an AI than just rewrite it for themselves. Some content i see is lazily edited and some is heavily. But I get the feeling that just about everyone is using it because it’s an easy way to get a bunch of work done without having to think too much.
A day that will live in Canadian Infamy
You are partly right … but if you sign up to a service to some of these dumb apps, they will redirect you to different sources to verify a purchase (whether it is legitimate or not). At the time, I was having a bunch of silly fun with my nieces and nephews fooling around with a new phone and finding new apps to play with. I think I got too carried away and wanted to get something to work without being careful enough.
The fun part was in finding some dumb face filter app that turned my big brown brooding middle aged male Indigenous face into a beautiful petite Asian princess that could talk and chat with my nieces and nephews. That was an expensive bit of fun that I paid for later.
Don’t feel bad about it.
About three years ago I got a call from my credit card company asking me if I had booked a first class flight from New York to Milan for $2,000 and reserved a five star hotel in Italy for $1,000 a night, plus a few other hundred dollar charges of other things.
I have travelled overseas before but I’m a budget traveller and I wouldn’t spend money like that … plus my travelling days were basically over anyway … plus I don’t live, work or go near New York city, I’m in northern Ontario, Canada!
I cancelled the card immediately and started looking back on what I had done that led to this. The only thing I could point to was that about a month or two before, I had been playing around with a bunch of phone apps and a few Chinese face filter apps I had experimented with and had signed up to trial subscriptions without knowing it which gave my credit card information through Google Play. I’m very careful with my credit card and apply every security feature that is given but that one slip up gave me away. I now layer Google play purchases behind Pay Pal tagged to a limited Credit Card to just that account and with all security, two factor authentication I can apply on everything.
As security minded as all this can be, all security professionals agree that the weakest link to any secure system are the fallible humans (and I’m one of them) who operate this stuff.
My favourite was in Toronto Pearson International to pick up an elderly aunt at the airport there … this was about 10 years ago … I don’t know the rules and I don’t go visit this damned airport every day, I’m not from the city but I know my way around … all I wanted to do was pick up my aunt who said she was ready and waiting … couldn’t find her even though we gave each other clear directions and locations … I missed her in about ten seconds between quick parking stops at the entry
Traffic cop told me to move along, I told him what I was doing, tells me to move along, told him it was my elderly aunt who needs help … MOVE ALONG! and threatens to ticket me otherwise … I move along … and can’t turn around so I follow the lane … ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE FREEWAY!
Then spent half an hour trying to figure out the freeway to get back to the airport … did it again and found my aunt … loaded her up as quickly as possible while the same traffic cop kept looking at us.
There wasn’t even time for a hug! It felt like we fleeing East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Maybe they did film in front of a dead audience and then just played prerecorded laugh tracks … how are we to know?
I’ve been on a motorcycle for over 25 years now and I’ve had some near misses but nothing serious.
That’s an amazing story and lucky you for making it through. I’ve known of two people in my circle who died from motorcycle accidents and a few more in my community and region who died … it’s also amazing to realize that you don’t need to be riding fast in order to get killed on a motorcycle. One woman in my town was at an intersection, moved across in an awkward way, got hit by a truck and neither were moving fast, she just got hit in a particular way, knocked down, pinned down by the truck, crushed and then died on the way to the hospital.
My near death experience was not as dramatic as yours. I was a dumb teen on a four wheeler on gravel. I did a major jump without knowing it out expecting it, launched about 20 feet in the air, landed front wheels first, launched forward and smashed my face in the gravel. Thankfully the atv went flying in a different direction and didn’t land on me. I also didn’t have a helmet on. I didn’t get knocked out and I was aware the whole time. I was just lucky I was fit strong and landed in a lucky way that didn’t hurt me too much.
I have a cousin who fell off an atv as a passenger, landed the wrong way, hit her head (again no helmet) severely injured, treated in hospital for a day before she died from injuries.
Motorcycles and ATV are dangerous machines
Exactly … it’s also a double standard because reddit is basically a capitalist model of the same digital system but no one ever complains or criticizes it.
The socialist digital creators built something and shared it freely with everyone and also don’t exert control over anyone.
The capitalist digital creatures built something and locked it up, monetized it and are using the user’s efforts as the basis for the business only the owners make money on and have complete control over everything.
It’s amazing because it’s a fantastic metaphor for the two platforms.
