100%, 12 year daily reddit user - feels like I’m out of a bad relationship. I moved all my third party apps off three weeks ago and have replaced all my time with Lemmy and the Fediverse.
I didn’t realize how poorly the experience had degraded - scrolling content mindlessly, most interactions were dull and sometimes weirdly antagonistic.
Conversely, my experience on Lemmy has been interesting content with more depth, connecting with people in a warm and welcoming way. I don’t expect this to become reddit - I wouldn’t really want it to.
I am excited for a future here as the third party apps are removed last this week and we can start a new adventure together.
The other thing is why this timeline? I think it’s because of the downgrade of the valuation on the IPO.
It seems like there are investors and other forces plus the absolutely awful communication and leadership from Huffman.
They are in this spot where people who don’t seem to understand Reddit are making decisions about it.
Even if this doesn’t “kill” reddit, the decision making has been very obviously hostile toward its users and future.
do you have any more info on how to get started with this? I have no desire to go back but would love to know how to loosely lurk like that
this is an interesting post-reddit effect, we have people of all different types and motives seeking new places.
A lot of people seem to think this is an all out battle between a new community and reddit. Like we have to beat them or something. The situation with reddit is not a win-lose, reddit would never go dark overnight. A lot of users are just over reddit and moving on. I personally don’t care about lemmy becoming the next reddit nor do I really care what happens to them.
A big difference to me with this migration is the instances seem to attract like minds. This is going to be a very interesting event to watch how the fediverse grows and changes.
this guy is such a loser
Couldn’t agree more, we need to continue to attract the kind of people who would really be able to help grow this kind of community, so if you have friends you think would like this, try talking to them.
Drop a couple bucks into support the admins and servers - think about streaming services you pay for and use less. $5-10/month to donate to a service you are using daily is pretty cheap considering.
