  • I hate these takes, I’m sorry, downvote me if you want, but I think the comment was shady.

You know these people and you’re best equipped to know their intent. If you got homophobic vibes based on your experience with them, trust your gut.

Writing as a gay man (and ex-vangelical), if I was talking about my crush and someone said that to me, I’d take that as shade. Not earth shattering hate or anything to get super mad about, but yeah I’d be like 😒

One can avoid these situations by avoiding crazy ass “devout” religious folks :)

  • Propaganda and all that, yes.

It’s also largely about the fact that—in theory—these are two jobs that involve ‘putting your life on the line’ to protect and defend innocent civilians, and usually in dire circumstances involving dangerous weapons/violent people. (NOT defending cops/US military, but just pointing out why those jobs can be publicly revered.)

Also, in many/most(?) other countries, shooting two people absolutely would register nationally because civilian gun violence is a big deal and not normal around the world. You happen to live in the one country on the planet where guns vastly outnumber people and mass shootings are a daily regular occurrence.

    But yeah. Propaganda. Mostly that.

  • Not sure why you’re being downvoted. I think this is a fair question.

My ignorant two cents: the internet. As always. It’s the internet polluting people’s minds. The far right used their billions to essentially purchase most media outlets. A stupid population is one easily controlled. Welcome to populism.

Step one: control content on the internet and media generally Step two: control the minds of folks perpetually online/consuming media Step three: control everything

When it comes to higher ed—you’re absolutely right. It remains true that folks with degrees on average earn more than folks without. Especially if you don’t have to sink yourself into student loan debt, a college degree is a phenomenal investment.

The problem is that literal 19 yr olds, who have never worked a fulltime job in their lives and have no assets and no financial literacy, take out $100,000 in loans to pursue a degree they know nothing about. And the parents are just like, “sure teenage son! Take out thousands—you’ll pay it back in no time!” Then the next thing you know, you’re 32 and you owe MORE on student loans than you did at 19 and feel hopelessly fucked. I get why some people—who go through shit like that—recommend avoiding college. But that’s a different motivation than what I see more on the far right which simply wants people less educated so that the population is generally stupider and easier to manipulate.

  • Very much that. Didn’t answer you at all.

To actually answer your question, people who don’t believe in the Male Loneliness Epidemic (MLE) think a lot of the “epidemic” is just shitty men complaining that nobody wants to be around them instead of doing any self-reflecting and changing their own shittiness. It’s tied to the incel movement (which is why you’re getting a lot of very snippy responses imo lol).

Plus, a lot of the champions of the MLE are insufferable dudes who maybe are lonely not because of some societal epidemic but maybe because they’re just fucking assholes?

Personally, I have no idea if there’s truly a MLE. I think a lot of it really could be asshole men online complaining that nobody likes them without recognizing that it’s their own actions causing their own loneliness. I also think it could just be the internet is ruining any sense of community and togetherness, and men are being vocal about it and tying this loss of community to men specifically, but idk, I feel like there isn’t some special issue of loneliness targeting men rn.

  • As a gay man, fuck this comment. Nothing about him reads gay. He says he’s straight. He has a wife. He has kids. He’s said so much anti-LGBTQ shit. He’s straight.

So fucking sick of people making homophobes out to be closet gays. Every time you say that a homophobe is secretly just a self-hating gay, you’re literally saying that gay people are the reason behind their own homophobia. If behind every homophobe is a self-hating gay man, then you’re saying that gay men are causing all the hate within their own community.

And guess what! It’s bullshit! 99.999999999% of homophobic men who identify as straight are straight. They’re not secretly self-hating gays—they’re just straight dudes who hate gays. And that’s who JD Vance is. He’s a run-of-the-mill homophobic straight man who fucks couches. Call it for what it is, goddammit.

  • THIS is why I’m on Lemmy. This comment, right here. This shit never gets said on reddit, and if it did, it gets ignored or downvoted.

As a gay man, I could not have put it better myself. They’re literally saying “Lol isn’t JD’s music super gay? Haha must mean he is too…. HAHAHAHA I’m not homophobic but it’s giving limp wrist…lol”

They’re trying to make being gay or gay ‘things’ into the butt of the joke. This is homophobia, people. It’s not that deep. Do better.
