I’m a biologist/bioinformatician—a lot of my presentations require some schematic representation of the analysis or pipeline.

I tend to build simple pipelines with PowerPoint and add animations (makes it easier for me to talk through step by step). If it’s complex, I build parts in some other thing (R, illustrator/Photoshop), and animate the PDF/PNG in.

Equations I try to avoid because most of my audience tends to gloss over them. On the occasion that I’m talking to more computational folks, I’ll build the equation elsewhere, export it as an image, and animate it in with annotations.

Again, I’m a biologist and present mostly to biologists, so some of this may seem stupid or nonsensical to folks in other fields.

I’m genuinely curious what that means. What does it mean to “be manly”? Is it bad to not “be manly”? Along a similar vein, what is the opposite of “being manly”? Who defined the qualities that make a person “manly” (and what authority do they have on the subject)?

I’m going to qualify this—all vertebrate eyes have a blind spot. Cephalopods also have eyes that are like vertebrates (this type of eye is called ‘camera eyes’), but their eye anatomy is such that no blind spot exists for them.

Death, despite being one of the progenitors of death metal, is less intense on the death metal growl vocals. To me, early death metal in general is a bit different sounding than modern death metal. Regardless, Death has a pure instrumental song called Voice of the soul which is part acoustic. It’s probably one of the most acoustically beautiful songs written in the genre.

I’ve heard some of my more senior colleagues call frontiers a scam even before this regarding editorial practices there.

It’s actually furstratingly common for some reviewer comments to be completely ignored, so it’s possible someone raised a flag and no one did anything about it.
