Yup, things have definitely improved, especially with more extremist instances like lemmygrad being defederated and phased out. I do also want to give a shoutout to the devs for not pushing their stance and letting the platform grow naturally.

I mean that’s basically the crux of it. That, and some moderation drama, and the software being very buggy a year ago giving people a bad first impression, and Lemmy still being susceptible to spam.

It’ll take some time before Lemmy (and the Threadiverse as a whole) improves its reputation and moves on from the “it’s a tankie website” take. That said, a lot of people in that thread are making the case for Lemmy, so it’s mostly just people worried it’s not as popular.

If you’d like to support archival in general, consider donating to https://archive.org/ . They regularly archive books and media that can be potentially banned. It doesn’t hurt to download parts of the archive on your machine if you want to be extra sure, but keep in mind the internet archive is massive with petabytes of data.

462k are the people that have created an account, Lemmy actually has ~40k active users (and even then “active” just means they logged in once this month). I do share the sentiment that not everything has to be super popular but Lemmy really could use more people.

The post is from 2 years ago but it does pose an important question which few people really talk about. The Fediverse isn’t scaling.

Any distributed system is inefficient, for one, because it lacks the economy of scale.

Sure, it’s probably worth the tradeoff, but what happens when we actually get so many people that servers start to collapse? Lemmy has ~45k active users, but let’s say we jump to 1 million active users. Small servers will stop working due to too much traffic, medium servers will need way more money to process the thousands of images per day, large servers will become too centralized. We’re already slowly going that way with the instance count steadily going down and users/instance going up.

None of this matters now but within the next 5, 10 years I think we really need a game plan in order for these platforms to succeed. You can’t just increase the servers to spread the load, the load on all instances is steadily going up.

I don’t know if this was requested before but I really want there to be a way to see all comments throughout crossposted threads. It sucks that there are so many crossposts that have like 1-2 comments each. I want to see all discussion about a post at the same time.

Their problem is that these answers affect their bottom line.

It’s more complicated than that. Adding friction and paywalls will quickly kill their userbase, requiring a proof of identity or tracking users is a privacy disaster and I’m sure many people (especially here) would outright refuse to give IDs to companies.

They’re more like a compromise than a real solution. Even then, they’re probably not foolproof and bots will still manage.

Not even the biggest tech companies have an answer sadly… There are bots everywhere and social media is failing to stop them. The only reason there aren’t more bots in the Fediverse is because we’re not a big enough target for them to care (though we do have occasional bot spam).

I guess the plan is to wait until there’s an actual way to detect bots and deal with them.

Personally I never reached a point where I had to use any kind of storage software. All you need is a good external storage and a little bit of organization.

If anyone is serious about data storage I would honestly choose external SSDs or an enclosure that supports SSDs. I’ve had terrible experiences with hard drives failing over the years or clicking and corrupting my data.

I don’t know if there’s a source specifically for this but when I often get stuck and start repeating myself I look up Merriam Webster’s thesaurus and start replacing boring words with better ones.

So rather than say something like awesome I’d say a word like marvelous, lovely, etc.

That’s called an intranet (which is like the internet but for a building or small area).

The internet isn’t really anything more than computers connected to other computers. If you want to make your own internet you can connect two computers whether wired or wireless, and voila. You can host a website locally that only those two computers can access.

Sooo… Cosmic is for the tiny sliver of users that want a DE… that tiles? Or those that buy a System76 machine and never change the DE?

Those that are fed up with GNOME and/or are looking for an alternative DE are a huge chunk of the Linux userbase. That’s literally why they created it. With Gnome reducing customizability and having 5-year old bugs never get fixed and breaking necessary extensions every update, it was warranted.

Why? They have public milestones and bug trackers while things seem to move at a good pace. At no point are they just sitting on praise doing nothing.

Having a unicode icon that can be copy pasted anywhere is nifty, but yeah I’m really not a fan of choosing this one.

Good post. I’ve been on Lemmy for a while (jeez, look at my account stats) but Mbin is starting to look more mature lately, especially with the fact that it works with Mastodon.
