I’m still of the mind that what got taken out because it was starting to support artists better than their labels / streaming platforms did. Losing it was a catastrophic blow to music preservation.

I feel you on the interface - genuinely. I also got the lifetime… But honestly they are becoming more and more “disconnected” from their roots. The latest ui changes would embarrass a first year art student and make a ui/ux developer weep. As a developer it’s infuriating watching the decisions these people make.

Winamp died because the jump from 2 to 3 (if memory serves) was a profound hit to system resources… Followed by the dev team apparently fucking off on anything that wasn’t optimization (see above for likely reason.)

Add in a dose of music platforms figuring out streaming and you can put the final nail in that coffin.

I always loved the simple statement that:

It illustrated the utter senseless linking of observed events to results with dubious research. Is it technically wrong? No. Is it correct? Of course not. (I hope.)

We are constantly being sold something. Sometimes it’s obvious - other times it’s not. Frequently its a bent truth to just nudge us in the direction the advertiser wants. Health is extraordinarily complicated. We know we should be healthy - but there is so much noise potential profit in the space… that it becomes hard to determine the correct path to take.

Shit like the above is effectively tabloid journalism. If it is sensationalist - and urging you to act without thought … you absolutely should give it as much credence as an article about bat boy in the checkout line. Until these pseudo journalism “half-truth” adverts get degraded to tabloid levels they will continue to pollute our information channels with their snake oil.

It is possible to distill correct - or at least better information from questionable sources: we play the overlapping circle game. If you compare multiple sources of partial truth… each source added can begin to define the boundaries of what is true (or at least accepted as truth.) Now this isn’t perfect and certainly doesn’t replace real research - but this method in combination with learning to identify masked advertising is a way to protect yourself from falling prey to their trash.

What’s to be done about this shoddy reporting? When you see it - call it out for what it is. Shame the publisher. Trash the poster. Openly mock them. Do what you can to tarnish the perceived reputation of that outlet. If they sell sewage then make sure the stink sticks to them. Enough people doing this will start a positive feedback loop and eventually lead to visible improvements.

Military signups are dipping. This is an appeal to the young and stupid which is the lifeblood of the armed forces grunts. Need meat for the grinder.

I had this as my take away too. I could personally give two shits about his or any others creators userbase / content - I think that if we want Linux adoption rates up it’s always welcome when it is talked about.

To be fair some of said stories genuinely could have been onion articles… In what sane world would we deport a 4 year old resident with cancer? How is that an actual headline? The times this year I’ve had to double check is astonishing.

I dropped it for similar reasons… initially I got tired of fighting with devs over false flags on vm usage. Never lost a case but it seriously was just the stupidest hoop to jump through.

This. Works flawlessly for obscuring filesharing from your provider and supports multiple connections. I’ve got the router splitting traffic across 4 different nodes and it’s a good balance of speed and security.

Personally, any provider that is selling a VPN and is feigning this holier than thou attitude shouldn’t be trusted with anything. If they are looking that hard at your traffic - I doubt they’d bat an eye at giving your data to anyone asking. Fuck that.
