Looks like a cult, tbh.

Britain with no irony: “You can’t come to a land and act like its yours! We were living here first!”

Well yeah, except the British empire has been dead for long enough that any possible benefits the average non wealthy British person today might have theoretically gained from a colonial past is long gone.

No actual responses just downvotes. Edit 2: forget it the responses were just daft. Downvote away or agree to disagree. I might also suggest reading the odd book on history and particularly economics from a left wing political perspective.

Did you actually just say that with no irony? The “western” world lives in relative luxury because of continued exploitation of the global south.

This is actually silly. Your suggestion that somehow the British empire survived the second world war is plainly nonsense.

Bankers might profit from ‘developing world’ debt. This is not passed onto impoverished former working class British people in any way whatsoever.

You all downvote this then go on about what a con trickle down economics is.

Where do you think your cheap clothes, devices, food, energy, transportation, etc. comes from? Today’s globalism is a direct descendant of colonialism. In fact, many people even call it neo-colonialism.

It is only a ‘direct descendant of colonialism’ in that globalism is the result of capital moving industrial production to countries without collectively bargained labour agreements or environmental protections. It is. BY DEFINITION capital that profits from this, not the average British worker. Consumers do not profit in capitalism. BY DEFINITION. Globalism has only harmed the average British worker, as they are now in competition with the poorest people in the world in terms of selling their labour.

Just as it was the expansion of capital followed by exploitation throughout the world that was ‘colonialism’.

I am done with this. Educate yourself. I will block people who post timewasting replies.

I agree with almost everything you say, except you are ignoring that capital bribes workers in the imperial core with a superior quality of life to maintain a compliant populace to provide a bulwark against the “slavering masses.”

It sounds like you’re anti capitalist and fairly well educated, but it’s a straight up lie to say that capitalism hasn’t increased quality of life for imperial core workers over that of global south.

If you honestly think impoverished British people benefit from whatever is in the British Museum in any meaningful way you are completely deluded.

You keep harping on about impoverished Brits as if the poorest Brits aren’t still more wealthy than 90% of the world’s inhabitants.

Like I get it, life is hard for poor people everywhere, but everyone in the imperial core benefits from western dominance. I’d much rather be poor in London than in Mumbai.

You don’t need to benefit to still have it better than the people it was stolen from.

Someone else getting knocked down leaves them worse off even if it doesn’t improve your situation.

I agree with everything you write.

Edit - I will that there is absolute poverty - living on whatever the price of half a big mac a day is (or whatever the current definition is). And there is relative poverty: living on less than 50% of the median household income in a given area.

Compared to people starving or trying to cross seas in small boats relative poverty in the UK is a great place to be, but in fact relative poverty comes with extremely serious health and mental health consequences.

The average former working class person in the UK had and has no say in any UK political policy. The Labour party abandoned the former working class in the 80s, with the final nail in the coffin being when Blair took over in 94, thirty years ago. They have had no political representation whatsoever.

In the reform act of 1865 (might have been 1860 or 1870) (long after slavery had been abolished in the UK) one in seven men (the richest one seventh, based on property ownership) were given the right to vote.

These people had no say whatsoever in the British Empire. Slavery made their lives harder, they didn’t benefit from it. The Elgin marbles were of no benefit to these people whatsoever.

Anyway, like I said, I am done. People just need to read and think a bit more. Poor thinking exists right across the political spectrum. We are all reaping this particular whirlwind.
