Ever cut a channel into a beam of wood? Measure once, maybe twice. Take your table saw and cut until you can’t keep cutting. Serial Mahoganist should be one tick before last.
Top right quadrant is full of forgetful carpenters.

This assumes there are no differences in skill level for serial killers…
No, it just implies that there is not a strong correlation between skill level and the number of measurements and cuts.
