Well the manager demanded I invite him to every meeting and I literally said 1 sentence in each 30 Min block

    He’s territorial and insecure.

I’ve requested a meeting tomorrow just to get an idea of what I’m supposed to be doing all day.

If this doesn’t work out, I’m leaving IT and moving to a different sector.

      territorial and insecure.

Facing retirement? Can see how he would want to retain some rags of dignity. You might have to discuss this with your (and his) manager - this is major interference with your job that you were hired for.

On the other hand, getting to know the company in another role could be a very valuable contribution to the company. Knowledge gained even under difficult circumstances is NEVER wasted. You might like to consider doing 2 days a week in another department to “broaden your understanding of the full spectrum of the company’s operations”. Also a valuable networking opportunity. Getting your face and competence known across other divisions of the company could be a way to increase your value to the organisation.

I think you’re absolutely right. If he wasn’t married to the sister of the one of the directors, I’d have gone to them.

I’d love some face time in other departments but I think this guy is a control freak and just wants me under his thumb even if that means I’m watching YouTube videos all day.

        Let’s see what happens tomorrow.

Best of luck! I also reckon that this bloke is maybe the reason they’re hiring - I suspect that top mgt knows on some level that this bloke is becoming a problem, and are sorta kinda hoping you’ll fix it for them so they don’t have to. You can lose your temper and make a fuss or, preferably, zip the lip and grin and bear it - for a while. If this is still a problem in a month, go to HR and ask for a secondment to another division as per previous comment. For your professional development. This may force mgt’s hand and require them to actually get off their butt and sort the situation, or they’ll be hiring again which is expensive.
