I’m not much of a gamer anymore, I only play stuff from the prepandemic, mostly 10+ year old games but tbh Linux works great for everything. Mostly been using Steam on both Ubuntu and Fedora KDE but it works flawlessly so long as you have your graphics drivers configured correctly.

I haven’t tried to pirate any games or install anything with WINE/Lutris so I can’t comment on that but I did manage to get the non-Steam Windows only version of Final Fantasy 14 working for my wife using a third party launcher. I got the impression doing that that an adept user would easily be able to set up standalone or pirated games without much trouble

Dodi repacks will work better than fitgirl, but with some fiddling you can get both to run, generally speaking.

the issue is not with running the game, but unpacking is usually just about impossible. i have less than 20% success rate, so i usually just unpack using w10 in virtualbox, then transfer it back and then it runs fine in lutris. it’s fiddly at first but you’ll catch on.

if you even get that far in ubuntu and their snap mess. you may avoid a few headaches with linux mint.

Worked fine for me, especially those repackers. There were occasionally some problems like repacks relying on some libraries that are impossible to set up but usually some other repack for the same game works fine. I use bottles flatpak for extra bit of security (since it isolates the filesystem and some apps), works much better than lutris IMO but you can’t really go wrong with anything

Load it in Lutris and try. Most games these days work in Linux, thanks to Proton. With the exception of games with Anticheat. But since your version is pirated, any Anticheat might be removed.

I use Heroic Games Launcher, you can just point it to the executable and it manages the Wine version, prefix, config, etc…

It’s not to put down any distro, but the only things I’ve been hearing about Ubuntu for years are negative, even from people who don’t use it for gaming but for native stuff and other tasks. Poor performance, broken things… To the point that many of the rants you see about “Linux” being bad are actually negative reviews that come after using Ubuntu specifically. Of course, this is just what I’ve come across reading online, I don’t actually know if it really works thaaaat badly. That said, in my case, every game I’ve tried on my distro (including repacks) has worked without issues, except for old games. StuntGP is still the only title that won’t run no matter what I do lol.

The process of installing repacks also isn’t very different from Windows, honestly. You open the installer with Wine, install the content, and that’s it. Keep in mind there are launchers that are much simpler to use than popular options like Lutris or Heroic. Personally, Faugus is the only one I like and the only one that has worked well in my experience.

In short, the overall state of gaming is pretty good, in my opinion, and it keeps improving. I recommend checking ProtonDB to get a better idea of which titles work well and which ones don’t.

Software on the other hand, specially cracked… Well, that’s a different story. It might be a huge skill issue from me, but I ended giving up on most software I used on Windows precisely because it always ran like crap on Linux (assuming it ran on the first place). I replaced everything with FOSS alternatives years ago, but there are gaps you just can’t fill in that regard.

Now I’m personally a Fedora KDE user but my wife’s 2017 era gaming PC runs Ubuntu flawlessly, it’s got an Nvidia GPU in it too. I think a lot of the issues you hear about Ubuntu basically boil down to user error. My wife occasionally will struggle with something on the machine but I’ll pop on and fix it pretty quickly. I imagine if she didn’t have me in house to troubleshoot she would be one of the people complaining about Ubuntu.

I’ve honestly been pretty impressed with Ubuntu using it on her machine; only thing wrong with Ubuntu is Canonical lol

Most LTS builds are stable at the expense of potentially compatibility with things like gaming. If you’re aiming at gaming, avoid LTS and stear clear of Debian and it’s direct derivatives. If Debian is upstream from the distro you choose, then your updates will be significantly behind the curve. There’s a lot of gaming oriented distros floating about, and really the only way to find out which is best for you is to try a bunch. I landed on Garuda Arch, it works for me, and if people ask for recommendations it’s top of the list in my opinion.

Yes, I’ve heard the same and confirmed from experience everything that’s been said haha. I do like Debian and derivatives, but it’s true that more often than not, the libraries that games require are always outdated there (even using sid) which means a lot of stuff not even launching… The small scene from Linux repacks also relies on the latest libs, I remember LinuxRulez telling a lot of people to ditch Debian and use Arch instead if users wanted to use their repacks without any issues. Time flies, I miss that dude.

The general argument I’ve read in the gaming community is that many run their games through Wine anyway, so playing everything natively takes a backseat and isn’t a priority, which I suppose works too I guess… Personally I would always prefer native builds when available, but to each their own. 😅

for repacks it’s mixed. some work fine, others not so much. Generally you want to try and install them via Lutris or Heroic Game Launcher. Like the newest Star Trek Voyager game I couldn’t get installed at all. I’m on Arch Linux and tried it via Lutris. The fitgirl repack just doesn’t complete the install for whatever reason. I think I just need to fiddle around with different proton versions but I got tired of dealing with it.

Plenty of people say that they work fine using wine and lutris. I however have spent 10s of hours trying to get them to work. I had one game work successfully one time and I thought i had cracked it but upon rebooting the system and returning to play more it just constantly crashed again.

I’m sure the issue lies with me somewhere and I havent tried it for a while but just be prepared for a fucking frustrating time if it doesnt just work like so many people claim it does for them.

I have the idea that it may have been my install of pop os that was causing me issues as I could never get arc raiders to load via steam and that is a game that most people said ran absolutely fine I just got sick of spending hours fucking about with things rather than playing games so ended up putting win 10 back on my machine with intention to return and try a different distro but just haven’t got around to it yet.

I’ve got Sims4 from fitgirl and anadius up and running for a friend. I can’t speak for other titles, but for this is was as simple as starting it with lutris. Modding was a bit harder, but only because the prefix was more difficult to locate, once everything was in the right place it worked no issue.

Edit: i would also recommend to install asdf and with that then protonge.

I’ve had mixed luck, some just don’t work on Linux regardless, legit or cracked, but fitgirl repacks generally work well in my experience.

I’ve been unpacking/installing them by adding the setup exe to steam as an external game, enabling proton GE and running the installer. The annoying part is then grabbing the installed files from the steam directory and then adding the gamr exe to steam as a separate thing I can actually launch. I tried normal wine. Normal wine did not work (on my distro at least, it’s complicated :/).
