Restoring my old childhood axe over the next few weeks. No manufacturer or any markings but it came from the grandparents place about 50 yrs ago according to ol’ boy so who knows how old it is.

Being down here the salt air has not been kind. But the edge of it is remarkably in good shape given the abuse it took. Blunt as shit so time to change that.

    one side untouched:

the other that’s half done (taking forever):

Plan is to restore the edge using the Rag trick

Not to put too fine a point on it, but, that rag trick looks excruciatingly dull.

      It’s looking very good!

Maybe some oil on it? I once restored an axe head in a similar way and was told that sanding it back to shiny would let it corrode again

I used a long oil soak on my Dad’s old hammers before any sanding. But hammers aren’t intended for sharpening.

          Sharpened hammers… 🤔

Trust the good ol’ ball peen hammer - best modern substitute for a medieval war hammer. Though I guess you could up the nasty by squaring off the head and putting a point on it if that’s your jam.

Medieval weapons already had that covered 😬

It was designed to pierce armour

And skulls. Saw a doco about the battle of Tothill Fields (one of the bloodiest in UK history) - the skulls with the square holes punched through them were victims of a war hammer in action.
