    beach ☠️

so I was down the beach and saw a strange interesting looking box thing bobbing in the water just off the sand

I grabbed a stick to pull it in to check it out, it was heavy, took a step in the water to have a look, I have good waterproof boots, read the label

    cremation remains!!!

I didn’t touch, left it there in the water, I scooted outta there

it will wash up overnight , I’ll let the early morning walkers deal with it

took a pic of the beach

Oh wow, I would’ve freaked out a bit too. Someone doing a sea burial and didn’t put the box out far enough, or not realising that you can open the box and hopefully not do a Big Lebowski with the ashes as you cast them to the wind over the sea? I’m picturing a group of people having an emotional and heartfelt goodbye at the end of the pier, and ceremonially and reverently tossing the box into the water… only to have it slowly bob it’s way back onto the beach! I guess that’s life (and death) for ya.

that’s what I was thinking, just people throwing the box off the pier or maybe from a boat not far enough off shore

I was also wondering the who and how , it will be a farce when it gets to them via the cops

OMG and then they have to do the “casting into the sea” ceremony again… but they decide to do it further out, from a boat this time, but there’s a storm and they take refuge on a remote beach and what comes bobbing into shore?

Yeah, when we (fam) were doing the burial at sea thing for my Dad (cos ex-sailor), we were told to put the container under water, open the lid and swish gently until the container was empty. Then dispose of the container thoughtfully. Same for my Mum at the same beach. We were SPECIFICALLY warned not to attempt to open the container in the air and then dump cos of the air cushion effects just above the water - the ones that keep albatrosses flying for months at a time. And not to just heave the container into the ocean unopened because it would eventually be washed ashore just like the one you found as there’s quite a lot of air in the standard container as well as the remains. My guess is someone wasn’t listening or didn’t read the instructions given by the crematorium.
