I’ve been sorting out my spices etc. and some of that stuff has been around way too long - expiry dates 8-10 years ago! I think it’s time to toss most of it and buy fresh.

I would also like to question my past self as to why she bought so much of so many different types of salt. I have rock salt, ground salt and salt flakes, all with iodised and non-iodised versions. Plus pink salt and black salt. The only saving grace is that salt doesn’t go off. Although the black salt smells like it has and I haven’t liked any of the uses recommended for it, so I’ve made the executive decision to toss that one out. Now I only have 7 different types of salt to manage!

I was at a fancy buffet breakfast recently that had an entire salt range! And a honey bar. Absolutely loved it. You could set up your own salt bar!

Is the black salt, kala namak? aka eggy salt, it has sulphur in it. It might be supposed to smell like that.

Yes, it is. It is supposed to smell like that, but it’s not something I actually liked. I kept seeing things about how it was really great in egg dishes so I thought I’d give it a try, but I really didn’t like it.

I sort the pantry and all my cupboards every six months, just a habit from being an expat and not having much stuff

My pantry is mostly pretty good, there’s just a few areas that got a bit out of control, especially the spices. I had a bit much clutter and ended up with bits spread everywhere, then I’d buy more of things because I couldn’t find them. And then of course I moved house which just compounded the chaos.

I’ve got a spot cleared now to store all the bulk stuff (I mostly buy whole spices and grind my own). There are a few things in there I don’t really use to get rid of, and most of the older packets are pretty much empty.
