Ugh my mother used to make me do it. Cleaning the silver was one of my many childhood jobs. To this day I avoid anything silver. You did well to sit there and do it all.
For donated items, I think I’d use the tinfoil & baking soda method. Then a quick rub with a microfibre cloth. Takes a lot of the elbow grease out of it.
