If Trump took the US out of NATO, he would genuinely be remembered as the harm reduction candidate for the Global South. Sadly, Trump would never actually be anti-NATO, US Imperialism depends too greatly on it.

Yes, we know, you are preaching to the choir here, lemmy.ml.

But I’d rather we not back out of NATO, decouple trade and invade friendly neighbors all while the US continues to screw over far away countries first. At this point, backing out of NATO is not going to help our bad behavior.

After that, we can worry about not screwing with other countries so much, hopefully.

So you’d rather we remain in NATO, terrorizing the global south, fully emboldened and screwing over the world? A US without NATO is one without the main imperialist army at its beck and call.

He absolutely would, NATO is seen very negatively in the global south due to its constant aggression and its role in maintaining western imperialism. Just look at what happened to Libya, Yugoslavia, and even covert ops like Operation GLADIO.

NATO didn’t stop a genocide; it aided one[1][2][3].

During the latter half of [the 1990s], Yugoslav authorities engaged in a brutal counterinsurgency against the Kosovo Liberation Army. An Al Qaeda-connected extremist group armed, funded and trained by the CIA and MI6, the KLA sought to construct an ethnically pure “Greater Albania” - a Nazi-inspired irredentist project, uniting Tirana with territory in Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia - via insurrectionary violence. Come September 1998, hostilities had erupted into all-out war. A UN Security Council Resolution that month demanded the two sides implement a ceasefire.

Yugoslav military forces were duly withdrawn from the province - in turn, the KLA exploited the army’s absence to intensify its bloody rampage, seizing further territory and purging non-Albanian inhabitants. A dedicated OSCE unit, the Kosovo Verification Mission, was also created to ensure Belgrade’s ceasefire compliance. KVM was granted full, unimpeded movement anywhere they wished locally. Their presence proved pivotal not only to the KLA’s savage crusade, but NATO’s subsequent criminal bombing of Yugoslavia March - June 1999.

Russia Today *RT, (sorry, some capital leaked in) writers would surely be unbiased and not writing puff pieces for their objectively imperialist funders, right? Right???

It’s my belief that a nation that fell apart and had the majority of their conquests leave doesnt have a right to reclaim them. Ukraine is a sovereign nation, and so is Bosnia and Croatia and… I invite you to seeth at nations now free.

Ukraine may be sovereign on paper, but it’s a vassal of the US, which couped its government in 2014 (and 2004). Previously. Previously.

There was immense nationalism and ethnic violence on all sides, which NATO used as justification to bomb thousands of civilians to death along with key infrastructure in order to prop up a western-friendly regime. NATO intervention didn’t help the awful situation, it only steered the outcome into the favor of the west at the expense of war crimes.

The Albanians were also committing extreme ethnic violence against the Serbs. When NATO bombed Yugoslavia, it killed over 300 Albanian civilians and over 1700 Serbian civilians, destroyed 164 state-owned factories, and bypassed UN approval against NATO’s own charter. Not a single private, pro-western factory was bombed.

The real reason NATO bombed Yugoslavia was because Yugoslavia refused to become a colony. Yugoslavia had agreed to give up Kosovo, but wanted the FRY to retain political and economic soveriegnty, and prevent NATO occupation. NATO countered by wanting full access to the FRY’s communication, infrastructure, and territory. Yugoslavia refused, and then NATO bombed them.

NATO involvement was about economics, not a humanitarian concern. NATO wanted open and full access to as many markets as possible, even if it meant bombing those who go against them in any real way. Just like what’s going on with Israel and the US bombing Iran, and NATO countries like the UK and France assisting Israel in air defense.

My sense at this point is that grotesque flattery works on Trump, but only to a point. Trump doesn’t really like anyone, the best you can do is a slightly-better-than-neutral relationship. (And at the other end he’s willing to coexist with anyone who hasn’t personally slighted him, like Kim Jong Un)

But big congrats to Trump for ruining the information space so completely that I genuinely cannot tell what’s real anymore.

I would love and hate to see proof that Mark Rutte really texted this to Trump.

The “Truth” post is 100% real, inarguably, but I haven’t seen anyone reporting the picture is of a real message from Rutte to Trump.

E: never mind that is… apparently NATO has confirmed the message is really from Rutte???

Ran a quick search and multiple well established news outlets are reporting this.

      I’m afraid it is.

The wording does seem very out of character for Rutte but it makes sense that he feels the need to stoop to Trump’s level and overdo the flattering.

        This is not real

        Don’t fall for their bullshit.

It turns out that—as usual—it is real.

It is posted by and primarily upvoted by .ml users.

Looking further into it you can see that almost every post in “World News” is from .ml users.

!worldnews@lemmy.ml is a lemmy.ml community. Why wouldn’t we be posting and voting in our own community on our own instance?

They are very anti-western everything but post western “news” heavily in communities. I wonder why?

The reason I use western sources when possible is because those are the only sources that western liberals tend to accept.

Furthermore they are brigading comments in this thread. Don’t believe me, just look at the upvote/downvote activity for comments here.

Yes, we’re “brigading” our own community on our own instance 🙄

On a related note, how is your vote manipulation report coming along? Given your trivially disproven accusations here, I predict it will be more of the same.

It will never not be funny that these people care so much about fake internet points, and think other people care about those internet points enough to ??? follow them around and downvote them?? Downvote lots of comments at once?? In a way that is somehow different from normal browsing behavior??

Like they’re not even tallied here like they are in the bad place, I genuinely don’t get it. Please drop the word bRiGaDiNg from your lexicon, I promise that absolutely nothing will change except you’ll be slightly less online and much better off for it. Sometimes you will get downvoted, and that’s okay. Things I’d want to know before deciding for myself whether the screenshot montage is real, regardless of whether Trump shared it (he did):

      • Have we seen other screenshots where Trump use enormous font sizes? Is that how bigger system text looks in this app? He’s not exactly youthful, so it’s no great surprise, but worth asking the question.
      • Is it realistic that Trump or an aide would have screenshotted the entire message within two minutes of it being received?
      • Does this messaging app routinely display the contact name offset and the profile image vertically cropped? What app is it?

Don’t know about any of it, but I’ve had Rutte as my prime minister.
This reads like the way he talks and thinks.
The biggest strength of Rutte is that he’s a chameleon,
so there’s no telling what he actually thinks,
but considering his party allegiance it’s pro-NATO through and through.
