So I just turned 18. I already got drunk in my life after I threw a party while my parents were gone, I wanna try drugs too. Is it worth it?

You should 100% smoke first. You can control your high way better. With edibles, it’s a complete crapshoot on personal dosing. And since you never experienced THC before, it’s likely to be overwhelming and you’ll probably never want to do it again.

I’d hold off another few years. There’s just enough published info pointing towards risks being higher under the mid twenties. The brain never stops developing, but that first twenty years in particular is easier to disturb since the development is more significant.

At 18, you’re still putting the polish on some key centers, so fucking with that for a little hedonism seems unwise until there’s more and better research available.

Me? I think I’d hold off until at least 21-23. Honestly, I’d do the same with any mind altering stuff. It’s not long to wait, and going at it too early can have long term consequences. There’s plenty of time to experiment and enjoy all sorts of recreational pharmaceuticals.

Iirc, I had my first (of three lol) drunk at 17, and while it did no harm as a one-off (not much will tbh), I also didn’t really sink into the experience the same as later experiments with mind altering. Mind you, I’ve never liked being drunk, and avoided any of the high addiction potential stuff, but the difference in my second drunk compared to my first was massive just by dint of being 21, just a few years of added perspective on what I wanted out of it, and how I approached it.

Weed, that’s another one that my initial exposure in my late teens (18 or 19) was just not as good as years later (late twenties).

But, I can say that trying it once is worth it. If you end up not liking it, no big deal. I’d just wait a little longer. Weed, be it smoked, edible, or otherwise, is a very powerful experience when used infrequently. Steady use weakens the benefits of it for fun imo, but a few times a year? It’s nice. It enhances joy and good feelings.

Just be easy with edibles. They hit slow, but hard. You can always have more if you don’t get the degree of euphoria you want after a half hour, but you can’t take it away if you get too stoned, which is absolutely possible.

Seriously do NOT eat that second edible even if you think the first one didn’t work. Gets me every time lol

Also be aware that you might not experience anything the first time you try it. And it can affect people in different ways. Some people feel high, some get agitated, some get sleepy, some feel nothing. And your tolerance for edibles is unrelated to your tolerance for smoke.

We know you’re excited, but for real, they take a while to kick in. Decide your dose and ride it out. If it ends up not working, double it tomorrow.

Find a nice couch and channel surf. Find a good nature documentary or some cartoons. Or, if video games are more you style, try something that doesn’t require much strategy, or on any save files that you care about.

If you DIY, my advice is to make a pan of normal brownies and a pan of weed brownies. It takes a while and you’re gonna be hungry but you don’t want to feel like you’re dead because you ate 4 weed brownies

If you take an edible it might take up to 2 hours before it kicks in. A common mistake people have as they take one, it doesn’t immediately take effect so they assume it was a dud and then they take more and then they end up taking more than they planned to. It’s not going to kill you or seriously hurt you, certain psychiatric predispositions excepted, but it will be unpleasant.

Last I saw pop science was saying it increases your risk of mental health problems by a shitload if youre under 21 or 25 or something, so try it at your own risk, but as a general rule I would advise weed over alcohol 100% of the time.

Prepare for potential paranoia/anxiety spikes while high, and surround yourself with comfort and people you trust. Its fun times.

I am not sure about the risk of “causing” per se versus “onset,” but if there’s any latent mental health stuff floating around in there, it will absolutely be like poking a bear. I’d suggest waiting a few years for sure.

Why are so many dumdums encouraging this?

Other than the obviousness of the fact that there’s not any good reason to try, weed is known to cause a lot of issues for young people. Even medical cannabis is generally not recommended unless you’re pretty old, because the risks are not worth the effects.

If you’re feeling the need to consume weed and alcohol that young, what you need is therapy, not to get high.

Suggestion: have a meal planned. Edibles are drugs, not food. If you want maximum effect then eat them on an empty stomach but have a sandwich or a pizza ready for after you dose so you’re not tempted to eat more just because you’re hungry

Cannabis is way better than alcohol, I recommend you start with 5 mg or better yet smoke weed first. 10 mg can be kind of strong especially if you’re new. Do you have access to Legal weed? If you don’t can you have someone buy from a licensed dispensary for you?

It will be very strong your first time so I recommend starting slow. I smoked a single joint my first time and that got me completely stoned for several hours. For your first time if you can reliably source whatever you want I recommend getting a strain with more CBD in it. It will give you a more mellow higher than just the high THC low CBD variants there are most common these days. I’m experienced and I still kind of prefer that.

The term drugs is extremely Broad and covers a very large number of substances that are completely different. I recommend sticking to weed for at least a couple years before you even think of trying anything else, even then there are certain classes that I would never recommend you ever try recreationally. Never do opioids, never use benzodiazepines recreationally and even with a prescription be careful. Psychedelics are great but you have to have to do it right. This is not an exhaustive list of do’s and don’ts, I might write one someday

Why not? It isn’t risk free, but low risk and for many people, very enjoyable. Keep in mind edibles are better for your health than smoke or vape, but it takes a long while to kick in and can be pretty intense. So match your dose to you body mass. If you underdose, its often to late to bump it up later. If you overdose, its too late and you’re in for your ride. If legal, store staff can guide you to recommended amounts.

It’s a toss up. Either it’s going to be a fun time, or you’re gonna accidentally overdo it and get sick. MIL was a og hippie, and she got sick after smoking again for the first time since Woodstock because everything is so much stronger than it used to be.

If you’re in a legal state, then sure. Start with small doses. I will say though, it does feel somewhat underwhelming. At least for me
