So, the Vulture article about Neil Gaiman…

Question: what would you do with his books after reading it? I have American Gods, Norse Mythology, and two short story collections Smoke and Mirrors and Fragile Things. They were my safe books when I was a teen, read them religiously, to shreds.

After reading that article… I… Just… What would you do with those books? They mean so much to me… But… Gaiman is monstrous.

If you’ve experienced SA and abuse, be warned, the article is extremely graphic and detailed. I’m so mad and upset.

    Opinions/suggestions welcome.

I think its important to separate the art from the artist. For example: Starship is humanity’s best hope for a brighter future in space right now regardless of how you feel about Elon. And I love the harry potter books despite her take on things. At the end of the day he already won in the sense that he has your money. Throwing the books out serves only to deprive you of something you enjoy.

I’m not saying forgive. And I wouldnt give them any more money (though i brought hogwats legacy when it was like 20 bucks). But whats done is done in the sense of purchasing them.

Never meet your heroes rings very true these days hey.

Look up the list of Weinstein produced movies. If you’re going to only consume ethical media, you’re going to have to cut a whole lot out.

I’m currently reading that article as well! Weird. I have his books. His writing is VERY good and yet he is among the worst humanity has to offer. A classic dilemma.

Throw them out if it makes you feel better

Mine went in the recycling bin this morning. But 1, he’s not someone I idolised at all. I liked his kids books, struggled with his adult stuff, and hadn’t actually read anything of his in years, so I’m less attached than some.

And 2, as a librarian I’m long past the idea of books as sacred objects- mass market paperbacks anyway. I donate my unwanted books to the op shop but these will be unsellable at the moment, the op shop will just chuck them. And I’m quite used to putting large piles of withdrawn library books into the bin. But I know it shocks some people.

      This is a hard one.

      Do you often reread them?

Hang on to them for now, you don’t have to do anything with them right now or make a hasty decision.

Give it some time and revisit them, if you can bring yourself to read them again or it invokes I’ll feelings then maybe at that point think about getting rid of them.

It’s all going to depend how you think about them as a collection or keepsake and what you’ll feel about them by keeping them and if you do while reading them again.

I just read the Variety article. 🤢 shudders

Edit: It’s such a moral dilemma. Reminds me of the whole Gill Sans thing with Obama’s campaign. Not excuses, but I always think, this is only the stuff that has been brought to light about someone who has been caught/called out.

these are accusations of serious crimes

let’s wait for the trial , ( I’m a fan of putting people in prison )

regarding his books , I read Sandman among other books, gives the rape scenes a bit more context , 🤨 hence the accusations don’t surprise me.

( 30 minutes later, can’t get that Sandman book out of my head now. In the book the main character buys a Muse, a Greek goddess who inspires. He constantly rapes her and his writer’s block is overcome. 100% of Gaiman’s work is inspired by evil 🤮 )

the question is, who covered for him, who allowed him to get away with it for so long ,

what to do with the books , no idea, no one will want them

a good use would be burning in a wood stove this winter, otherwise, land fill

Mine are already packed, so I have some time to think before I need to look at them in person. When I discovered the vile things about MZB I ultimately decided to keep them. Gaiman is less embedded in my brain so I may not this time.

Scott Auckerman of Comedy Bang Bang has a rule you can enjoy an artist’s work until you found out. So you can go back an read the books you’ve already read, but maybe don’t go reading anything of Gaiman’s you haven’t before

I didn’t mind being in the office at the old contract because it was a massive floor and not everyone was in at the same time, so the place was mostly empty.

It messed with my expectations for this job as it’s a much smaller office and everyone is in at once. Going from a government department to a sales led organisation and it’s much noisier as well

Smaller office, more people, and a lot more phone activity. I didn’t mind the old contract because I’d go in to a massive empty office and still mostly be by myself. The only downside was having the walkway facing desk, but I was just a contractor so I didn’t have seniority for the good desks

It’s kind of exciting looking for new roles. Picked up a bunch of useful skills and lingo where I am now so have been able to go for better roles.

Gather the artefacts! Process flow! Service delivery! Suck my balls!

It’s amazing how easy it is to sound qualified if you have confidence, a sales background and a firm grasp of terminology lol

Edit: I’d like to add stakeholder fucking management to the list. Over and fucking over. It’s the main part of my role i.e taking the punches for the company but i still hate that title.

Not letting the scope creep too far that the original purpose of what you were trying to do gets lost in the bigger piece of work. Basically means burning effort.

So I have an old PC, and I’m thinking of learning how to make a DT bot and using that PC to be it’s 24/7 server, that way no one here has to give up their sleep or risk a double-post anymore :) it’s about time we get another botbot.

I’m going to start looking into it tomorrow, regarding making one, and thinking of contacting the other City instances to see how they made theirs. I need to fix up my partner’s PC anyway, so I’ll be in the spare room regardless lol!

If anyone has any tips or anything I should know, please message me :) happy to collaborate as I’ve never coded anything let alone a script. But I’m willing to learn!

I was starting to do this but have run into walls trying to get Docker to work and editing the files to configure it.

You can find existing bots on github that just need a text file changed with the login details for the bot, where to post, and what to post. You can even tell it to pin a post and how long for.

Here are two to look at, you can either clone or download the repo to your machine:

      https://github.com/arcuru/lemmy-rss-bot

      https://github.com/SleeplessOne1917/lemmy-bot

I’ll check which one I downloaded to my computer when I can. It’s part of my whole learning linux/remote desktop/making a server project I tinker with when I have time

I’ve offered to do this multiple times and no-one seemed keen. I think it’s because people like the human nature of of the post being made by someone real? I dunno. Weird.

Please do not run it on a local PC though as you’ll chew through expensive power for an operation that takes milliseconds.

If you want to run it local you could get it running on an rpi or even your mobile.

But don’t do that, even the free tiers of all the cloud providers are overkill for the bot requirements. A cron lambda solves this, same on Azure as a Function and will all be free and not reliant of the power to your house.

The emojis you can do to via a List of special days, and then combine them with an AI to get the sentiment of the previous day and theme for the current day.

Please add a CI/CD pipeline that’s included in code and open source it so someone else can pick it up when you drop off. Pretty please add many tests.

This isn’t something I want to pair on as it’s a great first project and something that if I was going to do myself I’d rather just smash out and have fun doing whilst listening to music, not chatting.

If you get stuck though lemme know and I might help.

I just got home after work. No wonder I was thirsty when I got to work this morning - my morning cup of tea was still sitting on the kitchen table untouched. I hadn’t even put milk in it. It was just on the other side of the table so clearly I didn’t notice it this morning.
